New essay: The Art of the Slow Read –

Amazon Finds for Book Lovers

curated

People like to pretend reading is only about the book. It sounds noble. Minimal. Intelligent.

It is also false.

Reading is often about the chair being right. The light not annoying you. The mug within reach. The blanket doing emotional support work. The room quiet enough to hear yourself think.

A great novel can survive bad conditions, of course.

But why should it have to?!

Some objects are forgettable on their own. Put them next to a good novel, and suddenly they become part of the ritual.

Nothing dramatic. Nothing life-changing. Just a few useful, slightly indulgent things that make reading better than it needs to be.

All of these can be found on Amazon, which, for all its sins, remains very efficient when you need one specific lamp by tomorrow.

These are a few things worth keeping nearby when the plan is to read “for twenty minutes” and disappear for three hours.

Tea, coffee, or whatever helps you believe you are having a meaningful evening. While i’m writing this, Macallan 12yo is my choice.

A tiny object for people who enjoy convenience but still want to feel intellectually serious.

Because placing three books, a mug, glasses and a candle on the floor is not a system.

Not essential. Which is exactly why it matters.

Reading is never only about the pages.

It is also about space, comfort and atmosphere.
